Synopsis
Under the Surface is an intimate coming-of-age drama about Lyla Williams, a passionate teenage dancer chasing a future in the highly selective world of dance. When she’s diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Lyla is forced to confront the physical and emotional toll of managing a demanding chronic condition in an industry that quietly favors perfection, stamina, and reliability.
As auditions become rejections and rehearsals become battlegrounds between ambition and health, Lyla begins to feel like her body, once her greatest instrument, is working against her. Afraid of being labeled “difficult” or “fragile,” she hides her condition, pushing herself past safe limits to prove she belongs.
Everything begins to shift when she meets Paige Harper, a choreographer at a small community arts space who values honesty in movement over technical flawlessness. With Paige’s guidance, Lyla
starts creating a deeply personal dance piece inspired by the invisible labor of living with diabetes.
Under the Surface is a story about rejection, identity, and redefining strength, showing that those who don’t fit the industry mold are often the ones with the most powerful stories to tell.
